Coltrane collector Yasuhiro Fujioka took me today to the opening of the Sonny Rollins archive at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. There he introduced me to Maxine Gordon, the widow of Dexter Gordon and Woody Shaw. During a break in the event, the three of us walked across Malcolm X Boulevard to have coffee in the Harlem Hospital cafe. We talked out Dexter, Ben Webster, Coltrane, Joe Brazil, and Elvin. Maxine shared that Coltrane said that his quartet was really Elvin's band.
